Violinist MinTze Wu runs Sounds of Lyons, a chamber music festival held each summer in the small town north of Boulder.
Lyons hosts a wide range of folk and bluegrass concerts, and Wu works to make Sounds of Lyons eclectic in its own right. The festival, founded in 2009, has featured flamenco dance performances and music documentaries to complement the classical music.
Wu shared a unique, eclectic moment in the CPR Performance Studio recently. Wu blended a traditional jig from Ireland with a rhythmic passage from Johann Sebastian Bach’s Partita No. 2 for violin. Watch it above.
Wu also offered a hypnotic take on a movement from Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber’s Mystery Sonatas.
Biber wrote the music in the late 1600s but violinists rediscovered the music in the 20th century. Also known as “Rosary Sonatas,” the music is devotional but also fiendishly difficult.
