You can’t picture an amusement park without a Ferris Wheel. The first one in Colorado came in 1908, with the opening of Lakeside Amusement Park. A mile south, the original Elitch Gardens was already well established as a zoo. And in the 30s, they too added a Ferris wheel. When Elitch's moved downtown in the 90s, they put up an even taller one against Denver’s skyline.
But the world's highest Ferris Wheel – by elevation – goes round just off the road that climbs Pikes Peak, in a jolly little village at 7600 feet. Designed by one of Disney's own, it’s a place where Christmas lasts all year. At the top of the Ferris wheel at North Pole, look down Ute Pass onto the eastern plains, and when you roll down to ground level again, stroll through the village envisioned as Santa's Workshop by an 8 year old girl and brought to life in Colorado in 1956.
